About Emily

Is it possible to love tall trees and tall buildings equally?

On the surface, I may seem like a contradiction.

Marketer in tech, industry influencer + honours academic. Heels dance teaching assistant / performer, (pen named) romance novelist and avid researcher of gender and sexuality. Two sides of a confused coin if you just look at the surface. But if you know me well, you realize these are instead two essential sides of an internal scale that balances and feeds my creativity and drive.

I’m obsessed with human interaction. Especially communication mediated through technology. My degree in Communications, minor Digital + Print Publishing was my first major foray into how we create meaning through language (often using technology). Working at Tradable Bits as the Director of Marketing, which among many things involves shaping the development of marketing technologies that help businesses personalize their communications with “fans”, is my latest iteration of living this passion.

Relationships – especially intimate ones – fascinate me beyond all else. Our relationships with our mobile phones. Our relationships with partners. Our relationships with ourselves. Everything I decide to spend the precious little time I have on this earth pursuing is related to relationships. Therein underlies the trend to my superficially sporadic existence.

Now that you’ve found my blog, you’ll find I have much to say about relationships and human interaction. Writing and in-person discussions are my favourite media for these musings. Since most people lead busy lives, I’ve decided to lean on the writing option.

Some days I’ll write about my relationship with food (it’s a love/hate one). Some days I’ll write about my relationship with work, especially given I’m a woman who’s chosen the male-dominated tech industry. Some days I’ll write about my relationship with myself, and how it’s constantly pulled and shaped by my relationships with friends and family. Finally, when I’m feeling especially big picture, you’ll find my thoughts about our relationships with society as a whole. Often to do with how we’ve constructed labels that can limit or launch our opportunities based on which ones have been assigned to us.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief tour through my identity. If you’re interested in learning more about my professional life, you can visit my LinkedIn. If you’re more of a visual learner and want a taste of my personal life, visit my Instagram.

But most importantly, please enjoy reading (and subscribing!😉) to my blog.

Thanks for your time and please be kind.
